Thirteen from PYT complete clinical observerships in HMS-affiliated hospitals
Phyathai Hospital Group (known as PYT) of Bangkok, Thailand, continues to concentrate its work with HMI on developing and promoting high-quality clinical programs, with an emphasis on professional development for faculty and staff throughout the PYT network. In August, nine nurses and four neurologists visited Boston for a series of clinical observerships at Harvard Medical School-affiliated institutions.
The PYT neurologists participated in clinical rounds in stroke inpatient consultation and rehabilitation and neurological intensive care and attended educational conferences held at Massachusetts General Hospital. They also observed practice at the John R. Graham Headache Center at the Faulkner Hospital, which specializes in chronic headache conditions and headache-specific treatment and prevention methods.
Nursing professional development has been a major priority for PYT. The network has seen increases in both patient and staff satisfaction that can be attributed in large part to the strength of its nursing leadership team, headed by Executive Director Dusdee Tongpuy, RN, MS. The recent training programs for nurses are part of an ongoing collaboration between HMI and PYT focused on enhancing PYT’s professional practice model by increasing the nursing workforce’s capabilities in management, clinical practice, education, and shared governance.
The Institute for Nursing Healthcare Leadership helped to facilitate the programs, which took place in multiple Boston-area hospitals over two weeks. The PTY group included four neurology nurses, three emergency services specialists, and two oncology nurses.
The Phyathai Hospital Group’s commitment to nursing has also led it to assume the role of regional leadership, as a center of innovative thinking about the profession, its role in improving quality of care, and approaches to developing the infrastructure to support nursing professional development. In September, PYT will host its second annual nursing congress, open to health care professionals from all over Thailand. The first, held last October, drew 400 delegates for discussions on nursing best practices, including an address by HMI Director of Clinical Services Elizabeth Brown, RN, MSN, MBA.
This year’s conference will focus on critical success factors, best practices, and future challenges in emergency care. Brown will again participate, this time joined by Shelley Calder, RN, CEN, CNS of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, who will speak at the conference and follow up with nurses in the PYT emergency department.
