Nurses focus on professional development as Hygeia Hospital eyes milestone
Patient safety and staff development were the common themes of a set of Boston-based professional development programs organized recently for four staff from Hygeia Hospital, a general hospital in Athens that has partnered with HMI since 2002.
Hygeia nurse leaders Olga Daliggarou, Kyriaki Fragkoudaki, and Dimitra Samartza observed clinical rounds in the intensive care and perioperative units of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and met with nursing leadership teams to gain insight on quality and patient safety initiatives and strategies for nurse recruitment and retention. Maria Vasileiadou, Director of Human Resources at Hygeia, completed a training program covering key issues in human resource management and organizational development.
The group’s weeklong program was organized and facilitated by Patricia Folcarelli, RN, PhD, and Joanne Ayoub, both of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
The activities are part of Hygeia’s efforts to prepare for accreditation by Joint Commission International (JCI). Sharon Kleefield, PhD, HMI Director of Health Care Quality, anchored a January site visit that kicked off efforts between the partners to develop a sustainable quality improvement model and identify important measures the hospital will take as it prepares to meet the benchmarks required for JCI accreditation. Kleefield and HMI Director of Clinical Services Elizabeth Brown, RN, MSN, MBA will return to Hygeia in November to meet with clinical teams and help the hospital assess its readiness for accreditation.
