HMI in advisory role as Australia group embarks on community development project

The Springfield Land Corporation (SLC) has tapped HMI to assist with the strategic planning of an integrated health, wellness, and education campus that will be part of a community expansion in the state of Queensland. The population of Springfield, a western suburb of state capital Brisbane, is projected to grow rapidly over the next two decades, calling for significant investment in health care and health education infrastructure.

S. Bruce Dowton, MD, HMI Senior Vice President, said that the SLC leadership see the development of the health and wellness campus—and associated education programs—as an opportunity to create an innovative health care delivery model connecting community physicians, public and private hospitals, aged care and transitional care providers, as well as regulatory and governmental authorities. “The population of Springfield, currently home to just 15,000 people, is expected to surpass 100,000 by 2020. This demographic shift will require a major increase in the availability of health care services, with close attention to how the patient population’s specific needs will change over time,” said Dowton.

HMI’s role thus far has been to facilitate collaboration between the key stakeholders, including not only SLC and provider groups in the health care community, but also the Queensland government and its Department of Health. HMI is also helping SLC explore how education programs will be integrated into the campus. Dowton and other HMI team members have conducted a series of site visits aimed at synthesizing the perspectives of the groups involved and advising SLC on its long-term strategic plan.
