Paul Levy

It was an eventful summer for Paul Levy, the CEO of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC). In late July his hospital announced plans to invest $1 billion over the next 15 years to undertake a major upgrade and expansion of facilities. Levy told the Boston Globe that the teaching hospital’s goal was to “create a more rational and convenient medical center” for its patients and serve as a “model for how care is organized, both physically and clinically.”

In the same month, three top staff at BIDMC accepted new positions: two will become medical school deans (Chief Academic Officer Jeffrey Flier at Harvard, and obstetrics chief Benjamin Sachs at Tulane) while another has been chosen to lead a major medical journal (Herbert Kressel at Radiology).

So where does Levy draw inspiration and insight to help him address these and other challenges that come his way?

“Most of my ideas concerning health care management do not come from traditional health care journals or other publications,” says Levy. Instead he turns to publications like the Economist and to a selection of web logs (or blogs) focused on health care.

Levy has been writing his own blog, called “Running a Hospital,” for more than a year now. On Running a Hospital, Levy opens up to readers about the ins and outs of just that, mixing thoughts on clinical innovation and patient safety (transparency about quality of care is one of Levy’s pet subjects) with interesting behind-the-scenes ruminations on health care administration.

Visitors to Running a Hospital can find links to health care-related blogs that Levy has found most useful and interesting, covering everything from health policy and management to medical news and perspectives from other health care professionals and administrators.
