HMI’s Makadon co-authors third edition of top textbook on HIV care
HMI’s Harvey Makadon, MD and Howard Libman, MD of Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center have come out with the third edition of their highly regarded HIV, a book designed to give primary care physicians essential information for the care of HIV-infected patients.
First published in 2000, and brought out in a second edition in 2003, the book features p
ractical guidance on prevention of HIV, its management as a chronic medical condition, and the current state of anti-retroviral therapy. The book also details the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of opportunistic cancers, and common clinical syndromes, such as pulmonary, gastrointestinal, and neurological symptoms. It includes discussions of HIV in the context of a number of patient population groups, including pregnant women, minorities, and intravenous drug users.
The co-authors have both taught HIV/AIDS education to clinicians, nurses, and other frontline health care workers in the developing world. Their experience is brought forth in the new edition in chapters covering epidemiology, anti-retroviral treatment, and other clinical considerations in developing countries, as well as barriers to implementing care in resource-limited settings.
The book was published by the American College of Physicians (ACP). For more information, visit the book’s page at the ACP website.
