Fifth edition of University of Lausanne’s popular executive education course to be held in May
HMI and the University of Lausanne will gather health care leaders in May for the fifth offering of “Mastering the New Challenges of Health Care.” This five-day executive education course is designed to equip participants with the knowledge and skills required to understand and confront complex health policy issues.
The program will again be led by Miles Shore, MD, Harvard University professor and HMI Senior Consultant and Director; and Alberto Holly, PhD, Professor of Economics and Director of the Institute of Health Economics and Management at the University of Lausanne. They will head a multidisciplinary faculty drawn from Harvard University, the University of Lausanne, the London School of Economics, and other top institutions.
The course is aimed at individuals with potential for leadership in the health care sector, and regularly draws professionals from both the public and private sectors. Past participants have included major players from organizations in both the public and private sector, including hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, insurance companies, health ministries and authorities, and regulatory agencies.
Core program topics include the following:
- The scaffolding of health care systems
- Allocation of financial risk
- Role of technology innovation
- Improving quality in health care
- Role of consumers
- Innovations in health care
- Strategic decision-making
- Ethics
- Role of information technology
This year’s course will also include a special session on the principles of change management, as illustrated by Lean Healthcare. Lean Healthcare is an organization that applies the principles of the Toyota manufacturing system to health care process improvement. Dr. Shore, who will co-direct this session with Lean’s Inge Holck, said, “Although biomedical research has given us new understanding of the mechanisms of illness, resulting in new diagnostic measures and treatments, these innovations are too often released into a health care system lacking the appropriate processes to make them available to improve patient care. A serious look at process improvement can help reduce medical errors, waste, and duplication in the delivery of care.”
The program will be held May 26-30 in Lausanne. For further information and to learn how to register for the program, please click on the image to download a brochure. The course application form is available here.

CME program from HMSDC will focus on care of children
Last year more than 2,000 health care professionals attended one of the 13 continuing medical education programs delivered by the Harvard Medical School Dubai Center (HMSDC) Institute for Postgraduate Education & Research. These programs covered a wide range of specialties, including mental health, gastroenterology, and respiratory disease. HMSDC also teamed with local institutions to create a series of programs on occupational medicine.
On May 10th, HMSDC will present a day of discussions on the role of health care professionals in the protection of children and young people. Dr. Susan Bennett of the pediatrics department at the University of Ottawa will direct the program, which also features Dr. Celeste Wilson from Harvard Medical School and Children’s Hospital. Topics on the agenda include the identification and management of physical abuse and sexual abuse, emotional abuse and neglect, and head injuries resulting from abuse.
This program will be held at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Dubai. For more information, or to register, please visit the HMSDC website at www.hmsdc.hms.harvard.edu.
