In this issue we are pleased to bring you the exciting news that Dubai Healthcare City will launch a world-class tertiary care teaching hospital. This story has been developing for several months, as faculty from HMI, health care leaders in Dubai, a team of architects from a top firm, and clinical and administrative experts from throughout the Harvard medical community have worked together to design every component of the University Hospital.

HMSDC fellowship brings Gulf scientist to BWH laboratory

Ali Hilal-Alnaqbi, PhD is conducting research at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, working with colleagues in the laboratory of Joseph Bonventre, MD, PhD. Hilal is the recipient of a postgraduate research fellowship from the Harvard Medical School Dubai Center (HMSDC) Institute for Postgraduate Education & Research.
Dr. Hilal’s research involves gaining an understanding of the basic mechanisms of differentiation of human embryonic stem cells into renal lineage, with respect to biomechanical properties, appropriate extra-matrices, and optimal micro-fluidic device characterization and configuration.
Said Hilal, “I am very happy that I have the chance to do my research fellowship at this first-class university and with professional scientists. They cannot stop discovering and just do not want to stop asking ‘why?’”
HMSDC’s postgraduate training fellowship programs are designed to provide selected health care professionals with opportunities to advance their knowledge and skills under the tutelage of recognized leaders in academic medicine. Currently these programs take place in affiliated institutions of Harvard Medical School.
