Six from Asan Medical Center complete observerships in Harvard-affiliated hospitals
Partners Harvard Medical International continues to develop customized clinical and research observership programs that enable physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and scientists to train in top hospitals and research centers in the Harvard medical community. Recently PHMI and longtime partner Asan Medical Center congratulated six health care professionals upon the completion of observership programs in Boston.
Dr. Dong Wook Sohn completed an observership in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital. The Brigham was also the site of Minsun Kim’s pharmacy observership, which included tutelage in best practices for medication safety, investigational drug services, administration, and operational issues around the central pharmacy, operating room pharmacy, and outpatient pharmacy. Dr. Hyun Joo Park (gastrointestinal and interventional endoscopy) and Dr. Ho-Youn Park (orthopedics) completed observership programs at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, while Dr. Sam Young Yoon trained at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary. Nutritionist Yeon-Mi Lee completed an observership at Massachusetts General Hospital.
PHMI develops these programs in close cooperation with faculty throughout Harvard Medical School and its affiliated teaching institutions. Often part of long-term, multi-faceted partnerships, the programs are tailored to each participant’s educational and professional development goals, and are often the springboard for further collaboration between professionals at Harvard and the partner institution.
The 2,200-bed Asan Medical Center, founded in 1996, is Korea’s top tertiary care center. Through its affiliation with Ulsan Medical College, Asan Medical Center offers postgraduate training programs in all specialties and has a rapidly growing research effort in basic, translational, and clinical research. The institution commenced a partnership with then-Harvard Medical International in 1996, and has since collaborated with HMI and now PHMI on a variety of initiatives, including faculty and program development and academic exchanges. Asan and PHMI jointly sponsor a biennial international symposium in Seoul on cutting-edge issues in medical science and technology. The fifth symposium, entitled “New Frontiers in Oncology,” was held in June 2006. Planning is underway for the sixth symposium, “Present and Future of Neuroscience: From Molecules to Human Disease,” to be held June 26-27, 2009.
