Massachusetts General Hospital and Brigham & Women’s Hospital make top U.S. honor roll for hospitals
Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) have again earned high marks on the U.S. News & World Report annual Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals, with both hospitals ranking in the top ten. Boston is the only city to have two hospitals ranked in the top 10.
U.S. News & World Report analyzed data on 5,453 medical centers to produce this year’s rankings. Only 170 hospitals were ranked in one or more specialties and, of those, just 19 were of Honor Roll caliber.
MGH, ranked fifth overall, was among the top ten hospitals in the country in eleven specialties, including psychiatry (ranked #1 for the thirteenth consecutive year), cancer, cardiology, endocrinology, digestive disorders, geriatrics, neurology/neurosurgery, kidney disease, orthopedics, respiratory disease, and rheumatology.
Founded in 1811, MGH is the third oldest general hospital in the United States and the oldest and largest in New England. The 900-bed medical center offers sophisticated diagnostic and therapeutic care in virtually every specialty and subspecialty of medicine and surgery. MGH, the oldest and largest teaching hospital of Harvard Medical School, also conducts the largest hospital-based research program in the country, with an annual research budget of approximately $500 million.
BWH, ranked eighth overall, ranked in the top ten hospitals in the country in five categories, including kidney disease (ranked #1 for the second consecutive year), cardiology, endocrinology, gynecology (ranked #1), and rheumatology.
BWH, which has deep roots dating back to 1832, is a 747-bed hospital located in the heart of Boston's Longwood Medical Area. BWH is New England's largest birthing center (9,000 babies born annually) and a regional leader in high-risk obstetrics and newborn care. In addition to being the regional leader in preeminent women's health services, BWH is also one of the nation's leading transplant centers, performing heart, lung, kidney, and heart-lung transplant surgery, as well as bone marrow transplantation. A top recipient of research grants from the National Institutes of Health—with an annual research budget of more than $400 million—BWH is internationally known for its clinical, translational, bench, and population-based research studies.
MGH and BWH are the two founding members of Partners HealthCare, the Boston-based integrated health care system established in 1994. In addition to its two flagship academic medical centers, Partners HealthCare, a non-profit organization, includes primary care and specialty physicians, community and specialty hospitals, community health centers, home health and long-term care services, and other health-related entities. In addition to its patient care mission, Partners is one of the nation’s premier biomedical research organizations.
