Responding to the Sichuan earthquake
It is our privilege to feature this brief slideshow of photographs provided to us by our colleague Professor Qi Zhongquan, Vice Dean of the Medical College of Xiamen University. On May 16th, following the devastating earthquake in China’s Sichuan province, he and 13 other volunteer doctors and nurses entered the heart of the disaster area and began treating those in need of medical care. Over the course of their two-week mission, the team lived in tents without reliable access to clean water, hiked several miles each day to reach patients in remote villages, and treated some 700 patients, 161 of which were transported to Xiamen for further care. The team’s efforts were crucial in alleviating the suffering of hundreds while preventing disease for thousands of others. In the professor’s own words: “We managed to help and make a difference for so many people.”
