Organization matters
Once the province primarily of dedicated individuals working largely alone to provide care, health care is now, in its ideal practice, a fundamentally team-oriented activity. The individual practitioners must be integrated into complex institutions that function with the safety and efficiency of the most advanced technological organizations while retaining the focus on the humanitarian value of service that is so important to all of those concerned with healing. In this HMI World Forum, HMI’s Miles Shore and Bruce Solomon survey the organizational issues that have health care institutions around the world taking a close look at the practice of patient care delivery and education.
